MansField Folk Club on Facebook - this page replaces the old "Brown Cow" page.

For many years there has been a folk club in Mansfield.

From October 2011 the venue changed location to the Black Bull pub, on Woodhouse Road in Mansfield, and the Club now meets each MONDAY

Every Monday at 8:30 p.m. Doors open 8:00 p.m.

Generally this is either an open singers' night or a guest night, alternating each week, but it does vary. A "Feature" night gives the artist a fuller performance opportunity than is possible on a busy singers night.

There is a break halfway through the evening for a buffet (included in admission fee) and a raffle.

All Singers' Nights and Feature Nights £1 admission
Singers’ nights: all singers and musicians welcome.
Feature nights: 2 short spots from featured artist + floor singers.
Guest nights: admission as listed below (with discount for members).

Feature: Backyard Buskers
This Sheffield based trio have a love for Americana, folk, whiskey, tea and fudge; they also have beautiful three-part harmony singing and an eclectic mix of music. The line up is Jane Foggin on vocals, banjo and dulcimer, Richard Pointer on vocals and guitar, and Kathy Cookson on vocals, guitar and mandolin.
They made themselves very popular when they visited the club on a couple of singers nights in 2011
Don’t forget ...some floor spots are always available on feature nights

Feature: No Fixed Abode
Playing original and traditional folk music and living in Derbyshire, No Fixed Abode are fronted by Una Walsh singing in her own lilting Irish accent and Tony Dean supporting on acoustic guitar. You may well have seen them at the club in 2011- don’t miss what is bound to be a truly memorable appearance.
There’s always a few floor spots available on a feature night .. so don’t forget your instruments

Jigabit  with Bob Ballard & Paul Mein on vocals
Jigabit is a great ceilidh band comprising Fi on accordion, Al on bass, John on guitar, mandolin, banjo and fiddle and Bob on guitar, vocals and calling the dances. They've adapted their repertoire for tonight's club performance and Bob, ably joined by Paul on harmonica and vocals, will be incorporating some of his own songs.

Elbow Jane  + support from Philip Cockerham
I've been trying to get this band to the club for at least 4 years and now they're established as one of the finest acoustic acts in the UK. They bring emotion, energy and excitement to their music. Every one of their impressive line up of : Kev Byrne guitar, keyboards, vocals; Chris Chester bass guitar; Colin Burgess percussion; Joe Topping vocals, guitars, mandolin, harmonica and Richard Woods guitars, bazouki, vocals, has a great musical pedigree too long to list.

Phil Cockerham won a lot of fans when he played for us last year - I'm really pleased that he's agreed to do the support tonight.

  • November 2009 - slight change. You will find the player above may need an extra click to start to play the video. That's to fix a bug: Youtube was not correctly counting the number of views. (Number of views shown was lower than the actual number of views).
  • Note that there is a delay of a few minutes (or maybe hours) before youtube refeshes the statistics, so you may not see the view count change immediately.

The older videos (more than 40 of them) are still available, see the Brown Cow Livevideo website
